Maxtor OneTouch 4 Plus Not Detected

I have a Maxtor One Touch 4 Plus that is less than a year old.  It has been working fine, but now when I try to use it, it is not detected.  It only shows up in the Device Manager under Other Devices as a USB Device.  It has a yellow circle with an exclamation mark in it in front of the words USB Device.

I have looked through all the entries in the Knowledge Base that pertain to this problem, and it didn't help.  I tried hooking it up to another computer, and it doesn't detect it either.  Both computers are running Windows XP Media Center edition and SP2.  I have over 400 GB of data that I would rather not lose.

Please help.  Thanks.

Please see the Common Issues thread at the top of this board for a link to troubleshooting detection issues like this one.

Double click on the yellow ! in the device manager,

What does it say in the device status dialog box?

Re: Maxtor OneTouch 4 Plus Not Detected

I read all the thread and checked all my drivers as was instructed by this msg thread.  My drivers are fine.  I tried connecting the USB and the firewire and in both cases the drive was detected in Windows Explorer but not in Maxtor Manager.  I've only used this drive a few times but it always has issues.  Bad product...

Re: Maxtor OneTouch 4 Plus Not Detected

I checked the other posts under different headings and it looks like this is a problem of many people and yet the same old link (with useless info) is being sent to everyone.  Why is this the case?

Re: Maxtor OneTouch 4 Plus Not Detected

It finally just quit picking it up all together, not even an error, just nothing.  I'm going to have to send it in for a new one.

Yea, that link doesn't help at all.  It's probably just easier for them to give a generic response.

Re: Maxtor OneTouch 4 Plus Not Detected

This is a "common" problem because it is a symptom of many different source problems - operating system driver corruption, USB port malfunction, cable malfunction, partition corruption, drive failure, just to name a few.

The link that I supply is to a troubleshooter document that is very useful because it covers numerous possible source problems.

But sometimes drives just fail - please simply create a warranty replacement order if you have tried all the troubleshooting steps.
