I had this problem when installing a OneTouch III for my daughter a few years ago and got no help from Seagate/Maxtor. Now researching this question I found a clue at http://mohanbn.com/blog/easymanage-crash-solution. The problem is with a slightly different piece of software but the cure is similar.
Go look for your maxutilities.exe (for me it was in the default location, "C:\Program Files\Maxtor\OneTouch\Utils"). Make a shortcut for it. Then adjust the shortcut per the post cited above:
Right click the shortcut, click Properties.
Select the Compatibility tab and check the box for compatibility mode and select Windows 2000.
Now run the program from the shortcut. The OneTouch button seems to work OK after that.
Beats me why the software works on some XP computers but not others--this is for Seagate to figure out. I hope they come up with a real solution.

Application popup: freeagent.exe - Application Error : The instruction at "0x01522ed1" referenced memory at "0x00000000". The memory could not be "read".
Click on OK to terminate the program
I have not been able to open up the "Utilities" section of StxManuMgr.exe for my Seagate FreeAgent Pro external 1TB drive.
I have Googled until I was blue in the face and luckily I happened upon your sage advice to set the Compatibility Tab for Windows 2000.
IT WORKED!!!!!!!
Thanks loads.
