Maxtor OneTouch III Mini not recognised by Windows on 2nd PC installation

I have used this drive on a friend's laptop previously, with no problems. Now I want to use it on my desktop PC, but on none of the 4 USB 2.0 ports will Windows XP "see" it, with one or both cables plugged in  It is not in Windows Explorer nore Disk Management, but it is in Device Manager correctly with no problems there. I have tried everything I can think of, read everything I can find.

Fortunately as I had a separate backup of the Maxtor software I installed this, and received an error during installation, that ServiceNTService1 could not be started, errror code 1920. I did also see somewhere that if I encrypted the device last time that it would not be recognised by Windows, to stop theft I assume. I can't recall if I did this but may have...

Windows Update reports everything is in order and the latest service packs are in.

The drive light is on and there are no funny noises etc, and it has been stored in its box in a filing cabinet so I have no reason to suspect it is at fault.

Can anyone help please!
