Maxtor OneTouch Manager (OneTouch III) Not Recognize Drive, Vista Does

OneTouch III Como-USB,Firewire 320GB.  Has (for years) and does work fine on WinXP desktop. Installed Maxtor software, including OneTouch (OT) Manager from CD onto Win Vista64 laptop, plugged in drive's USB, per installation instructions.  Vista recognized drive and can access files fine.  Initial setup says to press OneTouch button on drive, which I did and OT Manager launches as expected.  But installation instructions say "Settings" part 1 of 2 screen should appear.  It doesn't. "Backup in Progress" screen appears, but never shows files being backed up.And never shows "Backup Complete".  Nothing appears to be happening. Had to click "Stop".  Then clicked Settings on OT Manager, selected folders to backup and manually selected Backup.  Again, "Backup in Progress" screen appears, but never shows files being backed up. And never shows "Backup Complete".  Clicked "Stop" after 20 minutes.  The selected folders do appear as backed up on the drive!  But after that initial setup above, I powered off and disconnected the drive. Upon reconnecting the drive to the Vista laptop, Vista recognizes it.  Pressing the drive's OneTouch button launches OT Manager, as expected.  But OT Manager now says "No Maxtor One Touch Found". I've uninstalled all Maxtor software and re-installed it.  Same result.  Initial re-installation acts as above.  The OT Manager screens aren't indicating that folders/files are being backed up. I can verfiy that new files have been backed up to the drive. And  after this second "installtion", the drive again is not recognized by OT Manager when disconnected and reconnected.  It is recognized by Vista.  I can copy files there fine. Have look through KnowledgeBase and Forums until I'm blind, but can't see a match.  Have researched lots ofthreads, links.. but some are for Vista32 only. Assistance would be appreciated.

Re: Maxtor OneTouch Manager (OneTouch III) Not Recognize Drive, Vista Does

Ike A   in Seagate Technical Support Chat advised me that the Maxtor software for OneTouch products is    "not compatible with Vista64" and that "Seagate is not updating that software".  So it appears that my OneTouch drives have become

"no-touch" drives, that seem to be accessible as simply external drives... but no backup software.

Re: Maxtor OneTouch Manager (OneTouch III) Not Recognize Drive, Vista Does

I would check around for some FREE Vista 64 bit backup software.   The drive does not have to have the Maxtor software to run correctly.

If you find a program or two, post it.  I use another software backup program.  Works faster, better and will show me real easy if any problems occured.

I doubt if what I use will work for Vista 64, it does work on Vista 32.

Re: Maxtor OneTouch Manager (OneTouch III) Not Recognize Drive, Vista Does

I have found that Seagate does offer its Seagate Manager backup/restore software that does work with older Maxtor external drives.  See the   Note   at this link:  http://seagate.custkb.com/seagate/crm/selfservice/search.jsp?DocId=196031&NewLang=en&Hilite=does+sea...

I installed  and ran it.  It appears to have backed up files to my OneTouch III successfully.  I have not tried to   restore    files, however.

Just note that the downloaded zip file (and some contained files) are named FreeAgentCN (presumably because this backup software was originally designed for their FreeAgent drive)... but it does install Seagate Manager backup software.

I  did not try to use the OneTouch button on the drive for the backup from the Vista64 laptop, as I still use the OneTouch III drive on a WInXP desktop computer.  So I just launch the Seagate Manager program from an icon.

Re: Maxtor OneTouch Manager (OneTouch III) Not Recognize Drive, Vista Does

Do you know if I would be able to password lock this drive the way I used to be able to lock it with XP?
