I installed maxtor manager and tried to backup "My Documents folder". Backup completed and gave me a green light but the backup file folder was empty and 0 files wer copied and 0 files protected.
So after a year of frustration and a crashed drive I finally figured out my problem. My user account is also my administrative account. And the ownership of "My Documents" was assigned to the administrative pathway and not my user pathway.
To remedy the problem go to "my documents" right click and select properties>security(tab)>advanced>Owner(tab). Make sure "Current owner of this item" is Is "JohnDoe(computer name\JohnDoe". The wrong setting is "Administrator(computer name\administrator). If you need to change ownership of the file I think you also need to check the "Replace owner on subcontainers and objects".
If you can't get to the my documents security tab in properties, you might have to fiddle with the file sharing options in my computer>tools>folder options>view(tab) and "Use simple file sharing"
