Maxtor OneTouch4 - Complete Drive Failure

I expect posting this message won't make any difference after reading other messages about this product. I purchased a brand new Maxtor One Touch4, copied all my data onto it (Mac Osx), the drive was working fine for 3 days. The next morning I come to use the drive and all I get is a flashing light. So I take the drive back to PC World (UK), to tell them about the problem and they tell me 'There is a known issue with these drives', I ask what issue, they reply, 'They just go dead'.

After being told this you can imagine that I was pretty mad.

The quote in the operating manual says (Page5) 'You are now ready to save your life'. What a load of ****

If the shop I purchased this product from knows there is an issue with the quality of this product, why the hell are they still selling it and why are Seagate not offering any support. Its still under warrenty and I expect to get my money back.

Final Conclusion, 'Last ever Seagate Drive I ever buy'.

Re: Maxtor OneTouch4 - Complete Drive Failure

I've got the same light and was hoping that was not the case.  I'm pretty sure the problem is not the drive itself.  Mine was less than a day old when it went kapoof, btw.  I transferred (not copied) all my information.  Went to bed, woke up, and the drive was dead.  I'm pretty sure, though, that if I rip it apart and take the actual drive out, and put it in my $20 external case that I bought when my WD MyBook did the same thing, It'll work.  I'm hoping, anyway.  These complex hardware/software things seem to be more trouble than they are worth.  The cheap external enclosures seem to work better.  I'll let you know how this comes out in a few hours.

Re: Maxtor OneTouch4 - Complete Drive Failure

Ok, well that didn't take too long.  Got my drive out of the Maxtor shell, threw it in my cheapo external case and guess what?  The drive works.  I didn't want to void the warranty, but I'd rather have all my data than a refurbished fresh drive.  I'm not paying them to recover my data.  Besides, I wouldn't want one of these drives again.  I'll stick to making my own.

Warning: Tampering with the drive case WILL void your warranty.

On the bottom, there are four screws to remove.  You'll need a small phillips.  Two are under the serial number tag, towards the top.  The other two are under the rubber strip at the opposite end.  This piece then unsnaps with a little effort.

Next you have four similar screws directly under that, holding the drive assembly inside the case.  Remove these.

With a little finese, the drive should slide out of the case.  Pay close attention to the vent at the top.  If you don't try to pull the drive straight out, there is a small plastic piece that will get caught.

Once this is out, you'll have a plastic "cage" surrounding a metal "cage surrouding the harddrive.  Look at the side with the 3 small + shaped posts.  The panel that the posts are on is what we'll remove to free the drive.  On either side of the end posts, there is a little tap.  Push in on the tap to release the snaps that hold the panel in.  Pull the panel out.  The metal "cage" should now come out.

Remove about 4 large phillips screws, then 4 smaller ones (you don't need to remove the small circuit board).  Now you'll have to pry the metal shell apart.  Voila.  Your drive is free and be put in any SATA enclosure, or in your PC and you can recover your data.

Hope this helps you.

Yes, just make sure that you get an enclosure that is compatible with Mac.  Almost all are.  I know mine is, because I just connected it to my Mac to make sure.

3.5" SATA

Try to look for something with a fan to keep heat down and get something with good reviews.

Re: Maxtor OneTouch4 - Complete Drive Failure

Hi. I did everything this post said. Took a few hours to pry the drive open. But when I hook it into my computer via a SATA card, the drive continues to fail and windows does not boot up (it is still booting from the correct drive, I tried that problem)  I think the Maxtor drive is just sending very confusing signals to the system. I'm going to give up soon, but before I do, any suggestions?

Re: Maxtor OneTouch4 - Complete Drive Failure

Thanks much for the detailed instructions!
As a supplement: If you do take off those two screws holding the tiny PCB (Printed Circuit Board) where the light and button are, you can slide that out of the way and the metal case slides off quite easily.  Then you don't need any prying at that step.

Thanks again!
