Maxtor breaking? It makes loud whirring noises

Maxtor breaking? It makes loud whirring noises when I turn it on and then it goes away after a while.

It sounds like the fan is going to rip out of it's case or something, or that it's going to explode. I've taken really good care of it so I don't know why it's doing this to me. I turn it on and it makes loud whirring sounds and then after one or two minutes it falls silent again.

Is this bad???
