Re: Maxtor personal storage 3200 stopped working

My device stopped working about two days ago -- coincidentally right after a Windows XP update.  I'm guessing that even though the KB here states that the message incidates the drive is bad, it has something to do with Microsoft.  I looked through the Microsoft KB using the error message as my search and did find that there are issues CD/DVD drives which suddenly stop working.  Unfortunately, I have not yet found a solution to the problem.

my Maxtor personal storage 3200 stopped working, too...

... but i think it's because i put the wrong power supply on it! so my question is this: do we think that the drive -- and the data on it -- is OK? that is: do we think that only the circuit board got fried (natch both the volts and the amps were higher, on the PS from my laptop)?? if i take it out of the chassis, do we think that i can install this device into another chassis or into a desktop computer? thanksalot!

Re: my Maxtor personal storage 3200 stopped working, too...

OK, I'm back. I took the drive out of the chassis and put it into my computer, in place of my second drive (there's no room for a third). My system won't power (much less boot) up, with the suspect drive in place. I'm not sure where to put the jumper, but I tried several ways (including none, as for "slave"). Do we think that the drive is bad? Could it get killed by too much juice from a wrong power supply?? Is this forum just for regular fokes or do Seagate techs hop on it? Thanks again...

Re: my Maxtor personal storage 3200 stopped working, too...

i think normally seagate people don't come here, it says its for users...

i dont think that theres a great chance of success taking the hd out of its chassis but i guess you can try but the label says it will void the warranty

and code 10 usually means the drive is dead :-(

Re: Maxtor personal storage 3200 stopped working

Hi, I have a Maxtor 3200 external hard drive that had been working perfectly fine until today, where it stopped working. Connecting the drive to my pc slows/crashes my Vista when going into the "My Computer" Window. Checking Device Manager made my drive show up, but checking under disk management lands me a "connecting to virtual disk service" message that doesn't change.. Disconnecting my drive resolves the problem immediately. Is there anything I can do to solve this problem? Might it be a virus that's causing the problem? If so, will my data within be destroyed? Plz help..

Re: Maxtor personal storage 3200 stopped working

maybe try it on another pc

ive seen that before, its annoying

open up the disk management and THEN connect the drive

or in my computer, right click on the drive, do Format, once that's done try the disk mgmt again

Re: Maxtor personal storage 3200 stopped working

Greetings, I also had this problem. So here is the solution. WARNING! DOING THIS WILL VOID YOUR WARRANTY! 1- Disconnect the HD from USB and power supply. 2- There are 2 screws at the back. Unscrew and open the box. (The plastic is kinda hard to open be careful) 3- Now you have a metal box in your hands. Unscrew and open it. 4- Now you will see a HD and a controller board. There are 3 screws that holds the controller board. Take them out. 5- Now slide out the hard drive and controller board out gently. 6- Unplug the controller board (power socket and IDE socket)from the Hard disk. 7- Look at the back you will see jumper settings. (Mine was set on Cable Select.) 8- Take the jumper out and plug it to Master ON position. now put it all back together. I have followed these steps, now my 3200 box works fine. I hope this helps. Good Luck

Re: Maxtor personal storage 3200 stopped working

Ok,
So like everyone else, my 3200 stopped working as well.  Windows XP would just report Error 10, and I could here a clicking comeing from the drive.

I've had the drive for a while and its probably out of warranty, and I figured the darn things probably dead anyway so I spent some time breaking it out of its plastic shell to try and change the jumper settings like the other user had said.  Changing the Jumper had no effect at all, same dead result.

I then just pulled the drive completely and put it in the system.  As soon as the computer powered up, the drive started to spin again.  Sure enough the BIOS recognized it, and it showed up as a drive again with all of my data.

Sooo.  After doing lots of searching there have been an awful lot of users of this drive reporting problems over the last 30-45 days.  Either the USB interface has gone bad, or there has been a driver change by MS, or maybe that new version of ITunes is screwing it up.

But be that as it may, I'm just glad I'm able to get the data off of it, and I'll be looking for a replacement.
