New To OneTouch 4...Quick Question

hey i just got this new hard drive because my laptop has a very small hard drive. i was wondering if after I backup my files onto the one touch if i can delete them from my computer.

i just backed up my files onto it and i had a file called "essay" on my computer, which carried over onto the onetouch. i deleted it from my computer to make more room on my computer and backed up my files once again, and when i checked "essay" seemed to delete again from my one touch....is that wrong??

It would not be advisable... then you won't have a backup.

Did you have that folder set as the sync folder?

Umm I'm not sure if I have it as a sync folder. The instructions weren't very detailed...How would I know if it is set that way?

Sounds like you need to work with the "custom sync" settings; however, I don't recall seeing this option on mine.

Since it seems to be sync'd by default (meaning, whatever I delete in my main will be deleted on the OneTouch mirrored folders), my current workaround is to create a separate folder on the Onetouch for "Longterm archives"...and put the stuff I want to delete off the main in there.

It would be nice to be able to turn off the sync...I wonder if this will slow down the incremental backups however.

Their other post made it clear for me...backups should be identical...they are not the same as archives.

Re: New To OneTouch 4...Quick Question

Is the Maxtor OneTouch 4 used only as a back up device for what is already on my computer and not for an ADDITIONAL drive. i.e. if I save a file to the Maxtor and then delete it off my computer, the next time I back up my computer the deleted file is also deleted off the Maxtor. My version does not have a "Sync" button. Is it possible to have files on the Maxtor that are not on my computer? The reason I bought this is so that I can clear space on my computers hard drive, store it on an accessory drive, and have more space on my computer, but so far it does not appear to work this way.

Re: New To OneTouch 4...Quick Question

I'm new to this but back-up means take a copy. So if you have any changes they will be incorporated into your back-up. Have you tried the following. Right-click on the file and choose: "send to". You should be able to choose: "maxtor (F)" to copy the files you want saved onto your external drive. Better still, create a folder on the Maxtor and copy and paste the files into it. Try this out with test files to make sure you don't lose anything.
