I have the same error problem or misunderstanding.
Disk full.
I use Maxtor's One Touch 4 backup software to back up the rest of my system onto a Maxtor 320gig drive model STM303203OTM301-RK.
It worked for awhile but now the backup terminates with a "disk full" error. And in fact the disk is full in part because One Touch keeps older versions of the backed up files.
Like Rumaweigh, I also thought the software would automatically delete the oldest duplicates to prevent this "disk full" problem.
To quote another user on another tread with the same issue :
"so is it common practice for people to wade their way through their backups and pick and choose what can be deleted or am I missing something? It would have been nice to have the option to set it to automatically delete the oldest files."
Any suggestions?

My application Seagate Manager mirriors what the Maxtor Manager does, in regards to keeping a History folder.
It keeps up to 10 copies before removing the oldest unless something is wrong.
Given you can not remove directories due to a "In use error, or permission" im assuming, I would
suggested run a check disk on the drive, see if windows can fix any permission issues then remove
the contents of the history folder again. basicly have it start over on historical versions.
XP
1. Click on start
2. Click on Run
3. Type CMD
4. Press OK
5. In the command window type CHKDSK X:/F (where X is the drive letter of your Maxtor unit)
6. it should run through 3 steps fairly quickly.
7. try removing the contents of the history folder, or what you couldnt before to see if that free's up the space
needed to continue backing up.
can also try disk cleanup, found by right click on the drive and under the general tab.
or Defragmentation on the Tools tab.
Vista
1. Click on start
2. Applications
3. Right click on Command Prompt
4. Run as administrator
5. In the command window type CHKDSK X:/F (where X is the drive letter of your Maxtor unit)
6. it should run through 3 steps fairly quickly.
7. try removing the contents of the history folder, or what you couldnt before to see if that free's up the space
needed to continue backing up.

I eventually determined that my "disk full" was caused by a single file--the same one on the various history directores"--which would not allow itself to be erased. I discovered this while manually erasing the history files in order to free up space. I could not erase this file. I tired all of the usual tricks to no avail.
Eventually I dusted off some brain cobwebs and opened a DOS window--remember DOS?? This allowed me to erase the troublesome file. Backup has worked fine since.
Hope this might point others with this problem in the dame direction.

I'm using a Maxtor One Touch 4 external hard drive (#9NT2A4-500) and I am also getting disk full error messages. I've read the other posts but none of these mean anything to me!
Can anyone explain how to fix this in very basic terms?
Thanks

Error/Message: Disk Full
Solution: Create free space by deleting files that you do not need any more
It's a little simplistic, but does that help? Have you tried deleting folders in the History?

I have a 500Gb Maxtor One Touch 4 with exactly the same problem. Here's my question: If I delete the Level 10 or Level 9 folder in my History folder, if that folder happens to contain the original document that was backed up and no further changes were ever made to that document, am I deleting the only existing version of that doc in my backup set?
Why can't Seagate just add a feature to the backup manager to "delete older backups" or something? Seems like a common issue.
Is there some documentation somewhere that explains how the History folder is structured and utilized so that I can be sure not to delete the wrong things?

I find Alan's (the Moderator's) answer to be rather flip. The product is marketed as "fast and easy to use." Figuring out how to delete (or automatically delete) old back-ups should not require delving into a Knowledge Base or Community Forum. The product is designed for the casual user, not the advance IT person.
Alan, instead of flippantly saying "delete the old files" why don't you explain how to do that? That's all the other person was asking. And it is certainly something I would like to know since it isn't explained in the manual supplied with the product. In other words, try helping people with their very reasonable questions rather than just assuming everybody knows as much about the product as you do.

I'm sorry, I did not mean to be flippant.
However, to be honest, deleting files is far from advanced IT knowledge.
1) Double-click on (My) Computer.
2) Double-click on the drive letter to open the drive.
3) Find files that you don't need anymore and which are taking up a lot of space.
4) Click on them to highlight them.
5) Press Delete on your keyboard to delete them.
This will clear up space on your external drive, or any drive.
