One Touch 4 not being recognized by Maxtor Manager

I have had a problem for some time with the Maxtor Manager not recognizing the drive although I can see the drive and contents via Windows Explorer.  Today, for the first time I rec'd a message that the drive could not be detected, and a question as to whether I wanted to format the drive.

Why is this happening?

Also I have had a problem over time with booting up my PC and and getting a message that the "Volume is Dirty" after which a dump takes place and some kind of recovery.

Is this drive what we might call "toast?"  Should it be reformatted (and if so, how, i.e. how do I get the Maxtor software back on the drive?)

Using Dell Dimension 9100; Pentium 4 3.00 GHz  4gb RAM  running Windows XP SP3
