OneTouch III and W7, it's not there

I installed Windows & on my HP desktop and plugged a Maxtor OneTouch III 500GB USB external into it.  Heard the tones indicating new hardware connected in USB port but never got any message that it was being installed.

The unit shows up in Control Panel>Devices and Printers and in Properties it says it is working.

However I can't find the device in Windows Explorer so I can't use it.  No writing to or from it.  Can't browse to it.

It appears to have the latest driver that from the cryptic name is a Windows 7 driver.

I also have a Western Digital USB external HD and it connected and works OK.

What can I do to "see" the Maxtor HD?

Have you ever used this drive before?

I would guess the drive is passworded.

Re: OneTouch III and W7, it's not there

It worked fine before I reformated my C: drive and installed Windows 7.  It is not password protected.  I just tried it on two other computers, one Vista and one XP and got the same results.  Some thing may have gone wrong internally.

When I plugged it into the XP machine nothing happened.   At least when I plugged it into the Vista one it gave the "New Hardware found" message and then after some delay said it was recognezed.  But it's not in Windows Explorer where I can use it.  I've gone throught the Windows troubleshooter on every machine with no success.

I just hope my Carbonite backup is good.
