Alas, yes, while some of the data are backed up, the others are old correspondences, teaching notes and materials, multimedia stuff, personal financial and tax records, some code used in analyses, etc. ... stuff I don't want to lose if it can be avoided.
And no, I tried it on two desktops but to no avail ... on both desktops + the laptop I have other maxtor onetouch drives that work so it isn't a USB or power issue. Strangely enough, Maxtor Manager can see it, but cannot assign a drive letter (shows up as One Touch 4 Plus: []^[]) ... and MM then says there is "either no partition or it cannot be recognized; do i want to format now?" ...
Looks as if its time to yank it from its housing and try the connect-as-slave option or the freeze-the-drive-and-then-try option.
