Seagate 9SD2A2-500 250GB
Windows XP SP3
Worked fine for over a year and now when I plug it in it shows under device manager but not my computer and is not being assigned a drive letter. When running disk management it shows as being online but the info is the same as the C: drive except the disk size:
Disk0............63MB FAT.........C:
74.53GB.......Healthy.............70.58 NTFS
Online...................................Healthy System
Disk1............63MB FAT..........(NO DRIVE LETTER)
232.88GB.....Healthy..............70.58 NTFS
Online.....................................Healthy Active
When I try to assign a drive letter I get ... The operation did not complete the partiton or volume is not enabled. To enable the partition or volume restart the computer.... which of course does not work.
Any help would be appreciated.

A great starting point for troubleshooting this issue is the following webpage:

Let me know how that works out for you.

I tried troubleshooting and still does not work.
I did plug it into a windows 7 laptop and it works perfectly.... only problem is I don't need it for the windows 7 laptop.
In my newbie mind it still seems as if XP is seeing it as C: and will not give it a drive letter no matter what I try.
Thanks for your time.... I can't believe I'm the only one to ever have this problem so I better start googling!

If the drive works on your Windows 7 system but not the other, the issue will be caused by something on the original system.
It would be good to try another external hard drive on the computer that isn't able to assign a drive letter.
