SafetyDrill doesn't boot

Just bought a 120Gb OneTouch 4 Mini. As recommended in the quick start guide, I tried to boot my Toshiba Satellite Pro A40 laptop (WinXP Home SP2) from the SafetyDrill CD to test it before trying to create a full disk image.

The CD loaded successfully, in that a selection screen appeared with 2 run options. I didn't change anything and after about 30 seconds (as it suggests) that screen disappeared, but then nothing. There was no further CD activity (I waited several minutes).

Switched-off and powered-up again but this time selected the "minimal" optional. A whole load of text appeared (about a screen's worth), looking like a boot process was happening but then it stopped and, again, no further progress (or CD activity).

There seems to be no detail on Seagate's website regarding what to expect during SafetyDrill's boot-up procedure but I feel pretty confident that neither of my experiences today could be considered to successfully "verify functionality"!! So now what? Can anyone describe what should be happening?

Cheers.....

Re: SafetyDrill doesn't boot

I am experiencing the same problem with regards to booting from the SafetyDrill CD.  When it first tries to boot, I get an error message saying:

Loading stage 1.5    GRUB loading, please wait... Graphic file "(cd)/boot/grub/message" is missing, press a key to continue...  I checked the CD and the file is there in the proper subdirectory, but for some reason it cannot be found in the boot process.

I am then directed to a dos boot screen with two choices, neither of which will boot the computer.

I do need to restore a SafetyDrill file from the Maxtor OneTouch4Plus (500gb) as I have had a crash.

There has to be a way to get the computer booted and into the recovery process.  Anyone who can shed some light on this would be a real hero!

Thanks,

Alex

Re: SafetyDrill doesn't boot

[ Edited ]
So going through the support process, here's what I get in response.  Now what?  Since Seagate  says, effectively,  "SafetyDrill is not really our product, it is Linux, and we can't help you."  What a  company!

Response (Emil) 01/23/2008 18:08  Dear David,

Thank you for your E-mail inquiry. With regards to your query, I would be glad to assist you.

I would like to inform you that we do not support the Linux operating systems .

Thank you,
Ben

Customer (DNaumann) 01/23/2008 09:39  Well, this has not addressed my question at all. Can I expect a response that is not regurgitated from your k-base?

Customer (DNaumann) 01/22/2008 18:35  Brand new machine, product. Appears to boot, shows second page logo with mostly unreadable linux boot messages obliterated by it, but one says "can't find file system" I presume on the CD, then says loading limited Knoppix, gives list of commands and prompt, but can't apparently read keyboard. I had to power off to get out of it.

Frustrating with a new product and new machine!

Re: SafetyDrill doesn't boot

I have a Satellite U205.  I managed to get all the way to the SafetyDrill screen by interrupting the boot by pressing tab at the splash screen during boot., then typing the following at the end of the line in the "cheat code" box.

acpi=off no-hlt pci=off no-hlt

It completed installation and allowed me to image the drive to the Maxtor 4 Plus.

So far so good.

Re: SafetyDrill doesn't boot

The cheat code did not work for me but it does for some.  Good luck!  Maxtor's solution for me was to download the Seagate DiscWizard which will has worked for me to get the hard drive image.  It is a crippled version Acronis back up software.  Product support has been very poor for this product.
