Seagate 500 GB expansion portable drive not recognized after mistakenly having been partitioned

I reinstalled windows recently and by mistake partitioned my newly bought seagate external hard drive. Now it does not appear to be recognized as an external drive by windows (although it does appear in the device manager as "seagate portable USB device"). I have emailed support but received no response. The product number is 9SC2D4-572

I have tried this device on 2 separate computers both running on windows xp. Can anyone help me please?

I have noticed that in the post about answering the most common problems (http://forums.seagate.com/t5/Other-External-products/Common-issues-check-here-first/td-p/3992 ) there appears to be a broken link for the Guided troubleshooter for XP/2000 for "Drive is no longer detected"

Re: Seagate 500 GB expansion portable drive not recognized after mistakenly having been partitioned

Hi JBS

Was wondering if you manage to solve your issue of the expansion drive 'not recognised'?? I seems to have the same issue as well... everytime i plug in the USB, the drive reads (yellow light lights up and the drive motor sound) but under My Computer the drive just doesn't appear and i cant assess it.. It's also reflected under my Device Manager as Seagate portable mass storage device and i call Seagate's Support (which i find its the worst support ever!!!) they ask me to access Disk Management, which reflects my hard disk as unknown;not initialised...

The support officer ask me to download SeaTools which is also of no use...!! The storage device still doesnt appear under My Computer which makes it as good as useless.. i only used this product a few times and it's giving me so many problems.. hope you can help me as i have some data in it which is important to me.. thanks alot!!!

Re: Seagate 500 GB expansion portable drive not recognized after mistakenly having been partitioned

Hi,

I had the same problem with my 500gb expansion drive both with Windows 7 and XP. I went to disk management (on XP: Run --> compmgmt.msc --> disk management ), created a single partition and gave the drive a name while doing so. I then formatted it and now the drive's recognised on both machines. So basically - go to disk management and assign the drive a name and it should work.

Cheers,
