Re: Seagate Expansion 2TB - Avoid Unless this Problems is Fixed!

Alan,

I just purchased this same drive on July 16th to act as a backup drive for my home lan.  I connected it to the USB port on my Dlink wifi box.  The drive worked fine until it went to sleep.  As described here it will not wake up.  Is the only fix "Unplug the drive?"  That does not seem like a very good workaround to me.  Are there any settings I can try on the drive itself to turn off this sleep feature?

I'm having the same problem and has opened two calls (N 01,075,808 and 01,156,577) that were not answered if you want.

A company this size with a basic problem like this can not not even respond to his client.

What lousy service. I do not buy more products from this company.

Re: Seagate Expansion 2TB - Avoid Unless this Problems is Fixed!

Hello guys, I had a similar problem with a USB mouse and the following Microsoft article solved it:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/928631

You can find more details about it on:

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc947756(WS.10).aspx

It seems the problem will happen on some non-spec-compliant USB2.0 devices, or in other words, devices that are not full compliant with all USB2.0 specifications. The article mentions Windows Vista but because it´s related to the device not following the standards, would be worth to try it on Windows 7.

Just my 2 cents.

Best regards.

Re: Seagate Expansion 2TB - Avoid Unless this Problems is Fixed!

I am running Win XP (SP 3) and have a similar (the same?) problem.  When my new 2-TB comes out of sleep mode it is not recognized, then I am asked what I want to do with it (copy pictures, or other irrelevant options).  Obviously, I want it to wake up without any fuss at all.

All of my automated backups to the drive fail.

I called Seagate and they told me to pay $14+ to talk to them.  I refused.

What can I do?  Thanks.

I have the same issue with this drive? I just purchased it 3 days ago. Is there a fix to this problem as I am not liking the idea of unplugging and replugging this hard drive every time as I have this hard drive tucked away behind my computer.

Re: Seagate Expansion 2TB - Avoid Unless this Problems is Fixed!

Just bought this yesterday as a backup drive for a Mac Mini, and I'm seeing the same problem here - I'm not even putting my machine to sleep, I'm trying to run a backup (I bought the drive as a backup drive). After a span between about 5 - 10 minutes, the drive powers itself down and the backup aborts. This drive is completely worthless if it can't stay mounted for more than a few minutes. I haven't found any firmware updates for it. Guess it's time to get an RMA and send this back. I'll think twice before getting a Seagate again.

Re: Seagate Expansion 2TB - Avoid Unless this Problems is Fixed!

You must install the Seagate Dashboard and follow the instructions.

Adjusting the Power Setting
You can choose how long your drive should remain inactive before it goes into power-saving mode.
Power-saving mode conserves energy by telling your drive’s internal storage disk to stop spinning when it is not in use. Though power-saving mode uses less electricity, it takes a little more time for your drive to become active again when you want to use it.
If you use your drive a lot, you may want to choose a longer time interval, so that your work is not interrupted when opening files from or saving files to your drive.
If you use your drive less frequently, you may want to choose a shorter time interval, so that your drive is not consuming more energy than it needs.
To adjust the power setting:
1.
In the Drives panel, select the drive you want to adjust and then click Drive Settings.
The Drive Settings window opens.
2.
Click Power Settings.
3.
Select an interval from the drop-down menu or click Reset to Default to return to the original power setting time for the drive.
4.
Click Save to save the power setting.
5.
Click Close to return to the Dashboard.
