Hi. I have a 500 gig seagate portable external drive. I formatted a copy of windows on it. After the reboot from installing windows, I get a Disk Read Error. I can't boot from the external drive.

Logged in with my internal drive, the external drive is recognized and i see a copy of windows installed in it. The only problem is that when i try to boot from that external drive, it gets a read disk error. I wan't to get a copy of windows on it so that just in case my internal drive has problems someday, it'll be easier for me to do things if i have a copy of windows on my external drive. Any suggestions? Thanks.

hello i have the exact same problem only i don't want to boot windows from it i just want to use it as a weekly system back up. when i bought it i thought i could just plug it in and leave it there, when i plug it in when desktop is on it connects windows 7 recognizes it great! but when i start up with it plugged in i get the message READ DISC ERROR PRESS CTRL+ALT+DEL TO RESTART i do this and just get the same message again. i bought this drive cos i read good reviews on it but i'm not too computer savvy and don't understand why i cant just leave it plugged in 24/7 as that is what i believe they are designed for. either way i'm trying to find a solution online but still don't understand why it just doesn't come ready prepared to be used plugged in as i don't want to have to move my computer table every time i want to plug the usb to the back of my desktop.

OK, i found a fix that works for me.  In BIOS, I disabled this device in the boot menu.  Now seagate external ST310005EXA101 device does not power on until after windows 7 starts.  Problem solved (for me).  Of course this means that I can not ever boot from this device, however at least I can re-start the computer without having to remember to un-plug the external Seagate drive first.  Hope this helps you with your boot problem!
