Seagate Replica - full restore not working - Seatools output

Hello Everyone,

I'm having some problems doing a full  restore via my Seagate Replica.  Here is what happened with the exact steps I took:

My primary hard drive died and I got an exact replacement (exact model brand new) and installed it.

1. Installed new identical in every way hard drive (WD2500BEVT WD Scorpio Blue as if that matters)

2. Booted off of Seagate Replica Recovery Software bootable CD from http://www.seagate.com/support/external-hard-drives/portable-hard-drives/replica/

3. Restored my system via a full system restore

4. Rebooted to a blinking cursor and the machine never boots (Doesn't matter that much as I only want the data on the machine)

5. As I don't care about getting this machine back up and running I popped out the drive and connnected it a universal drive connector via SATA/USB to copy the vital data off of it to a machine that works.

6. I'm able to see files and I do see file sizes but all the files don't open and seem corrupted.

Am I missing something?

After that I figured I should test the Segate Replica to see if it maybe had an issue itself.  So I downloaded Seatools from the link above and it gave me the following output:

As you can see, no matter how many times I tried I keep getting errors on the drive. Any ideas are appreciated?

Should I be restoring the OS before I do a restore?  Or am I doing something else not detailed in the manual?  Is there some other utitlity that would help?

Thanks,

Joe

Re: Seagate Replica - full restore not working - Seatools output

[ Edited ]

If it is failing seatools, then it looks like a big part of the problem is that your drive is faulty and needs to be replaced.

As for the restore, no, you aren't required to install the OS then do the restore...the full system restore is supposed to restore the whole system...OS, programs, data, the whole darn thing.

You might try running error checking on the external drive on another computer to see if that makes any sort of difference...dunno  if it will but it's worth a shot.

Try a new recovery cd, try all of your restore points available...if it still won't work...then do a manual restore after you reload your OS onto the new drive and look into replacing this external...

Best of luck!

To all users: If your data is stored ONLY on an external hard drive, then it is NOT a backup. A BACKUP is having the data stored in TWO or MORE locations. If it is only in ONE location, you don't have a backup at all. If the data is important to you, then have it stored in multiple locations to prevent data loss.

Re: Seagate Replica - full restore not working - Seatools output

Hey Silence711,

Thanks for your reply.  Just so you know I've tried to restore from 5 different restore points and 2 validated Bootable CD's  No matter what it has always lead to data restoring and having a file size but being unaccessable.

You are right in that I might try it on a new machine and will do so later today.

Any other ideas are deeply appreciated.

Re: Seagate Replica - full restore not working - Seatools output

Hi Joe, et al,

I'm having the identical proble: HDD died, brand new identical HDD installed, Replica restore using Seagate Recovery CD-R worked exactly as Seagate says it should. Reboots only to blinking cursor. Checked new drive on another system with Windows Explorer. All files and structure looks normal.

What solution did you find for this problem? Seagate tech support says reinstall Windows and start over. sort of defeats the prupose of having a "full system backup."

Thanks for any help.
