Seagate Replica

[ Edited ]

Hello,

I'm using Windows 7 Professional 64 bit with a single 120 GB hardrive (SSD). I have the 500 GB Replica (with latest driver version), it's only half full. It works fine so long.

I have two questions and would be happy for an answer:

a) Whenever I try to access the Replica through my Windows explorer, it crashes and hangs up. I can only select the first folder (name of my PC) and then another folder of my choice. But any deeper attempt will lead to a crash. What's wrong with it? I tried this with several PCs, but I can't access the files on any one.

b) How can I set manually a restoration (or restore) point? Of course it automatically makes a single restore point at about 8pm every day. That's fine but when my system crashes, I won't see the files of the day later that time again. Of course, there's an instant save every few seconds, but this permanent mini saves won't be restored when using the recovery CD and selecting the last restore point.

Could you please help me?

Thank you!

Re: Seagate Replica

The restore points can't be set manually.

If you wish to run a backup with software other than the Replica, you can use the Windows backup utility:

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/products/features/backup-and-restore

To see if the drive can be fixed so that it doesn't crash when you try accessing your data, please run chkdsk on it:

http://seagate.custkb.com/seagate/crm/selfservice/search.jsp?DocId=184611

This will fix any bad sectors on that drive that can be fixed.

Should this not work, then your only option will be to reformat the drive and start over. Please keep in mind that reformatting the drive will destroy the data that's on it.

Re: Seagate Replica

Thank you for your reply.

The drive is fine, chkdsk says it's okay.

I've connected the Replica with another PC, running Windows XP. And there I can access all my files without crashing the explorer.exe

Seems to be a problem with Windows 7 64bit. Is there a fix?

Re: Seagate Replica

It is compatible with that operating system as well.

Does Windows Explorer only crash when you try accessing the Replica?

And do you have SP1 installed?

Re: Seagate Replica

I got a Replicate message that it cannot find restore points. Therefore, it would not be able to do a full system restore. I pretty much bought the drive to ensure I could do full system restores. I do not remember the error message. And the message does not replicate. It was something about VSS? of something not working/installed/etc so the set points could not be found. I was directed to customer support, but I've found nothing that is helpful. Also, I couldn't figure out how to post a message! That's why I'm responding. SIDD

Re: Seagate Replica

I fully checked my disk and it said it was OK too, but when I tried to restore my files on another system it only "appeared" to have restored the files -- they were all 0 KB.  Were you actually able to recover your files from the Seagate Replica image?  Did you do anything special on your XP machine to get it to work?  (I've tried Windows 7 and Windows Vista without much luck, so now I'm thinking of downgrading to Windows XP and installing Replica on an XP machine to see if it works.

Re: Seagate Replica

Hey Everyone,

Replica software doesn't seem to work at all on Windows 7.  I've tried it on Windows 7 64bit and it doesn't even load.  Looking at the update site http://www.seagate.com/support/external-hard-drives/portable-hard-drives/replica/

It looks like they aren't supporting it anymore.  Last update looks to be 2009... =(
