USB 2.0 Drive won't run at USB 2.0 in a USB 2.0 port

I have a Maxtor Basics 160GB HDD and it was working fine on USB 2.0 until yesturday when it stopped working at USB 2.0, and reverted back to 1.0. I have tried using other cables, and other computers but always get message saying my device can perform faster if you plug it into a USB 2.0 port (it is in one). A collegue has the same drive and I even tried in his computer, his works fine, when I plug mine in I get the message. I have a lot od data on this drive and use if for my work, running Virtual Machines off of it, they are too big for my work computer! Obviously you can undetstand that it is now taking me around an hour to boot them up and has caused problems for them. I have had a look around and cannot find any fixes of any sort, or even a mention of this problem. is it something common? I could return the drive and get a replacement, however this will be annoying as I have to transfer all the data off of the drive and I don't want to do it if its just going to happen again.

Any help you can give me is much appreciated.

Re: USB 2.0 Drive won't run at USB 2.0 in a USB 2.0 port

To find out if it's a problem with the drive, I'd try using it another PC and see if it runs at USB 2.0 there.

If that doesn't work, then maybe it is a problem with the drive.
If it does work in the other PC, to get it running correctly in the 1st PC, you can try the procedure listed here.
