Uninstalling Maxtor Manager Software, Help

I can't figure out how to uninstall the Maxtor Manager software. It doesn't show up in the Add/Remove Programs for Win XP nor is there an uninstall executable file in the programs folder. I've searched all over the web and can't find any instructions on how to uninstall this thing. Please advise.

Re: Uninstalling Maxtor Manager Software, Help

Not sure if this helps, but I was having software issues and tried to uninstall as well. While manager did show up in my add-remove, it wouldn't uninstall. So I tried to reinstall. When you insert the cd and try to reinstall, you get an option of modifying or removing. I clicked remove and it worked.

Re: Uninstalling Maxtor Manager Software, Help

My issue:  Maxtor Manager would start up and the display would immediately disappear, even though a button remained in the "open windows" taskbar indicating the program was running.  Unusable.  :smileysurprised:

After a few hours of researching my local machine for a resolution, and a few more hours researching issues on the forum, I gave up fixing it locally and decided to try the Seagate-recommended remedy. :smileyindifferent:

Seagate recommended remedy: uninstall and re-install the software.  Nothing found for Maxtor or One Touch in my Add/Remove programs.

So I tried to reinstall the software from my Maxtor One Touch IV Plus, where it resides.  Repeated attempts failed with a 1603 error: updated version already installed.

I found and renamed Maxtor folder in my Program Files folder (a step left out of the Seagate-recommended uninstall procedure) .  Reinstall did not work. Finally moved the renamed Maxtor file to my Backup drive (not the Maxtor drive).  Reinstall did not work. Deleted Maxtor keys in registry.  Reinstall did not work.   :smileymad:

Seagate says this 1603 error is a problem with either Windows XP not running Service Pack 2 (but my machine is Service pack 3).  Or, per Seagate, it is  a problem with Windows Installer. For the latter, Seagate recommends updating the installer, but the Microsoft site in their link states the latest version of Windows installer is part of XP and need not be downloaded separately.  (Per Microsoft: "Note: Windows XP already contains Windows Installer version 2.0. Thus, you should not have to install the Windows Installer Service (MSI engine) on Windows XP.)"

      What to do???  :smileysad:

Another day's research and experimentation revealed the problem to be related to Windows Installer.

I researched Windows Installer in Windows Help and Support.  I found that the Installer uses keys and log files to prevent unauthorized reinstalls (and various other reverse engineering and patching of proprietary software).

Tracked down the location of the log:  C:\Documents and Settings\UserName\Local Settings\Temp.

Look out!  I found my Whole Past Life in there!!! :smileysurprised: And I had just used the Disk Cleanup utility!

But there you may find a file with a "Windows Installer" icon named something like setupOT4Plus_G7 (you may find something different after the "_", or some name related to your installed hardware).  I double clicked the file, and SUCCESS!  :smileyvery-happy:  Maxtor Manager installed!!

I must reboot to see if this will now detect and manage my Maxtor drive.....wish me luck.  Will post back.  :smileywink:

Re: Uninstalling Maxtor Manager Software, Help

Very sorry to report that, after spending a day getting the Maxtor Manager uninstalled/reinstalled,  I have the exact same problem:  Maxtor manager starts up fine from the desktop shortcut.  But as soon as I click anywhere on the window, the window disappears, even though the software is still running per Task Manager and the taskbar icon.  Other windows display fine, just not Maxtor Manager.

Anyway, hope this helps someone with the uninstall /reinstall issue.....
