I have a Seagtae External Extension 2TB Drive which does and does not work..
I have Win 7 and when I boot up sometimes it is there but more than likely I get the message it is unrecognosed.
Win gives the 'connected' sound at boot up but drops off, sometiems immediatkey other times in ahour or so. When I disconnect even after told it was unrecognised, I get another 'disconnect' sound, so it knows it is there.
It is warranted by Seagate until 2014 according to their site and the Serial number but can I fix it somehow? I have 1.5 TB of stuff on it so do not want to have to try and offload this to return it unless i have too, on the day it is recognised.
I have tried with other compters, XP and Win and it is there and also and drops off like it does on the primary 7 box.
In Device Mgr in the USB lists it says unknown device.
Any suggestions please.

Sorry to hear about this!
Can you try this?

Thanks for the reply.
I checked the device mgr in Win 7 and the USB showed correctly and strangely enough since I started the box this morning about 7 hours ago, it has stayed connected okay. Usually I get a 'ding dong', The Device is unrecognised and it disconnects.
I am not sure what to do. I don't really want to have to send it off to Seagte but I guess I have no choice. I checked and it is under warranty until 2014.
I bought it at Officeworks in Sydney 13 months ago so maybe they will swap it.
