If I buy a Seagate 640GB Expansion Portable and crack open the casing (Yes, I know that will void the warranty), will I find a standard-size 9.5mm tall notebook hard drive inside?
And if you know the specific model number of the drive inside, that would be great.

Yes, you will. It will be a SATA drive, SATA interface for a laptop.
I don't know what the model number would be, though, sorry.

I've read that the drives used in some portable external units are 12.5 mm or even thicker, so they won't fit in most laptops. You feel sure that's not true with the Seagate 640GB Expansion Portable?

I'm not 100% sure of this, but I believe that's only true of the 1TB-size drives these days.
At any rate, from the Seagate point of view, I hate to say this, but it's a bit of a moot point since we don't support or recommend that the external enclosure be opened up and the drive used inside a laptop.
