Wrong Power supply used

Hi

I made a massive mistake and wondering if anyone can help me out. I have a Seagate 250 GB external hard drive. I plugged in my laptop power supply and turned it on (19v 4.74A) insted of 12v 2A power supply that it is meant to have.

The green LED on the hard drive and on the transformer just flashes now and I cannot hear anything from it.

Is the Hard drive itself likley to be screwed? or is it just something in the power supply blown?

If anyone has any helpful suggestions they would be greatly appricated

Cheers

Re: Wrong Power supply used

I'm suffering from the same exact scenario. I've tried calling and asking the support for help but they were absolutely no use. I have over 100 gigs of irreplaceable files and I'm very desperate for some answers. Is there any way to repair this issue or do I need to get a new external hard drive and have the old data recovered? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Re: Wrong Power supply used

what do you mean tech support was useless?  what did they say?
you dont have a backup?

in my experience this means the drive's power supply is shorted out, and thats not good...

Re: Wrong Power supply used

i think this is a flaw that many drives/ laptops have the take the standerd 12v fitting. anyway i ended up doing the same as a mater of intrest is it the grey u shabed one?
i relly think these divises neen a fuse of some sort and an odd power cord fitting witch they dont
you have to choices send it back to seagate it may or not be coverd by warenty. or do as i did see my other post. dont think now that iwill ever get a matching controlor bord !!! and evan if i do it may still be somthing else!!!
hope this helps

If you toasted the unit, you MIGHT be able to salvage the HD.  There are a few posts about the USB portion of the unit going and opening up the unit (your warrant  is toast when you put in 19v) and plugging the HD into a external HD case you can buy at any computer store.
You MIGHT have toasted the HD in the external.  That also takes 12v.   But for some $30 for one of them, it's worth a try.
NEVER keep files on ANY one unit / area / location.

Check Youtube for vidoes on swapping out the HD.

Re: Wrong Power supply used

I would have to say it's GOOD they have a standard power supply plug.  You can get a extra power supply from Radio Shack or E-bay.  That way if you take the drive different places, you can have an extra power supply.  I tape over the voltage switch and mark the unit so nothing can change it.
The meager unit supplied just barely supplies enough power to it.

Re: Wrong Power supply used

I have tried it in a usb dock with no success, however I am on the look out for the exact same model of HD and then try to swap the control boards over, I have a sneaky suspicion this is all that is wrong with it, Any suggestion where I can find what is now a realtily old HD?

Re: Wrong Power supply used

What type of power supply do we ask for if we need to buy another one. I lost mine so I can't hook up the hard drive.
