Today I purchased a Seagate 500GB Expansion Portable Drive to replace a Seagate Freeagent Pro external hard drive, which had recently stopped working probably.
After connecting the USB cable to the drive and my computer, a pop-up box stated that Windows (XP) had found new hardware. I was then somewhat confused when I realised that XP seemed to think I'd installed an Initio Default Controller, and wasn't recognising the Seagate expansion drive.
I've searched the internet for answers, and feel like I'm going round in circles. Can anyone help?

I took a look at that article, and the driver providers for USB Root Hub are all listed as Microsoft.
I've established that I have a Conroe 1333-D667 R3.0 motherboard, and having visited the ASRock website, I have the option of downloading the following drivers:
The question is, should I download all the drivers listed?
Not sure if this is relevent, but computer also has nVidia G-Force FX graphics card.

I give up!
Downloaded the list of drivers available for my Conroe 1333-D667 R3.0 motherboard, and also made a point of checking that Windows Updates for my XP SP3 computer were all up-to-date.
In all the years that I've owned my computer, I've never encountered a problem with a plug and play USB device, until now. I've run out of ideas as to what I can do to get my computer to stop recognising the ST905004EXD101-RK expansion drive as Initio Default Controller, so only option left is to return is to the electrical store I purchased it from, and request a refund.

It may be possible that file system driver has been corrupted. In this case you go to control panel to admin tool to computer management and finally to storage disk management. If your drive not show there that means hard drive is not physically connected . So you need a good technical support for helping out from this problem.

Same problem, same HD. I tried other kinds of cables (Y type and filtered cables), reinstalled usb drivers although I have SP3 in my XP OS, plugged it in all 6 ports but nothing for now.
I tested it on my notebook which has Vista installed and it worked fine.
My desktop computer is an old model so all I could think of is that it doesn't suplly enough energy to Seagate External. Sometimes it will bip, accusing low power, but I thing the Y type cabel should have solved it (maybe not?).
Motherboard manual says USB ports are 2.0 so it shouldn't be an issue, considering that I already have SP3.
I really don't know what else I could try. The catch is that I only bought it to work with my desktop computer where I need a constant backup.
