Xbox 360 will not recognise Seagate External Hard Drive

My Seagate 3.5 inch external hard drive (ST300003U2) will not show up as a portable device in my Xbox 360.  It works perfectly when connected to a PC running Vista or XP.  Microsoft support says that if the device is recognised automatically in their operating systems, it should be recognised with the Xbox 360.  Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Hello,

Unfortunately we do not support this device with the xbox systems. You may look online to some of the xbox forums and may find some help.

How has the drive been formatted, I know when connecting an external drive to a PS3 it has to be FAT32 not NTFS

Re: Xbox 360 will not recognise Seagate External Hard Drive

Ok so let me get this straight..... Seagate makes xbox360 HDD's  than goes making external usb HDD's that absolutely wont work with an xbox 360.  i just bought a 750GB drive FOR my xbox 360 so i could stop thrashing my laptops hdd and now i find out i cant.............. which idiot in your R&D department figured this out. Horrible that you havnt found a fix or at least underground whitesheet. Linux users cant use your power saving features because your a M$ sell out? So tell me are you people as a corporation planning on returning my money?

Re: Xbox 360 will not recognise Seagate External Hard Drive

I understand your frustration, but I hope you will understand that Microsoft makes Xboxes, not Seagate.  Seagate drives usually do comprise the internal drive inside an Xbox, but not all the time, and that has no bearing on what external drive will work with an Xbox.

Seagate external drives were not designed with Linux in mind, it is true.  One would need to write his/her own driver.
That's not to say it's impossible.  Maybe someone here can yet help or you might do some googling of this topic.  I'd be shocked if it's never been done before.  Good luck!

I'm having exactly the same problem.  I have an Xbox 360 premium and a 500GB freeagent desktop, and when I plug the Freeagent into the Xbox, the hard drive powers up (i.e the orange light comes on) but the Xbox does not recognise the drive at all, yet it recognises other usb devices (such as a USB pen) and my freeagent drive works fine on my laptop.

I was hoping that this might be a firmware issue, or at least an issue that would be resolvable via a firmware update, but I've had a brief look and there doesn't appear to really be any firmware for the freeagent drives.

If you or anyone else has a solution to this problem it would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Xbox 360 will not recognise Seagate External Hard Drive

The Xbox 360 only supports the Fat32 or HFS+ filesystem, for your Xbox to recognise your External drive you need to format the drive with one of these Filesystems, i would recomend you download Macdrive and format your drive with the HFS+ Filesystem with that as the HFS+ Filesystem doesnt have a 4GB filesize limit that Fat32 does.

Groovy.  Now all I have to do is find somewhere to put 250gig of data while I reformat :smileysurprised:)

Cheers for the info though, much appreciated.

Re: Xbox 360 will not recognise Seagate External Hard Drive

I would love to be able to answer that question, but unfortunately I still do not have anywhere to put 250GB worth of data and I cannot afford to buy a new portable harddrive, so I cannot reformat and will not be able to reformat until I can afford one.

If anyone else manages to successfully reformat their drive, please let us all know of the result.

Until then...
