First I had some corrupt data and chkdisk errors upon booting PC after trying to unsuccessfully delete files.
Also, Maxtor Manager drive test said my drive was bad and needed to be serviced. How can this be? I have only used the drive like 6 times. Honestly, after this I am going to stick with Wester Digital drives.
I too wanted to format. There is no way to select format in my Maxtor software. But, when I plugged it in once, I got the message that it needed to be formatted so I clicked it. Said format failed because unable to create partition. (I got this message multiple times later.)
My goal was to format 2 partitions- one NTFS and one FAT32.
After trying really crappy software from Seagate and DOS commands in Windows, I wasted a couple hours.
I was able to corrupt the partion with the Seagate. After that Windows XP allowed me to format.
I could erase the partion with DOS diskpart.exe. After that Maxtor Manager could format even though the drive could not be seen by Windows XP.
And guess what? Now the disk tests as good and does not needed to be RMA returned.
EASEUS Partition Master 3.5 Home Edition made partitioning and formating both NTFS and FAT32 a breeze.

Also my drive was beep beeping and light was flashing. Why? Not enough electrical power was being supplied. Because I hooked it to the extra USB ports on the front of the computer and not directly to the motherboard. I hooked the power USB in back port to the motherboard and the data/power USB plug to the front port. I knew this was the problem because the drive was fine when hooked to xbox 360 and another PC with only rear USB. This can also cause lots of strange errors.
The Maxtor Manager software for my 160gb OneTouch mini 4 was on the drive. I copied it to my PC before hand. This software is available to download in support.

Although this doesn't allow you to do the auto back-up and the other features... nothing was working for me so I went into Computer Management | Disk Management | deleted the partition that was on the GoFlex drive, then right-clicked the empty partition and formatted from there with a new drive label. I still have the Seagate drive and the new drive showing up, but the Seagate one will not let me click it, touch it, look at it, regardless of anything. At least it's still usable space this way. Good luck.

Two free software programs.
Freebyte.. will backup anything you point it at.. unlike the supplied software.
You can created different backup to different drive (multiple backups !)
Comodo backup.. more features.. automated backup..

In disk management, you should be able to delete all partitions and then make one big one. if that's what you want.
