help, maxtor one touch III 500 gb firewire/usb problem

i have a maxtor one touch III 500 gb firewire/usb drive that i bought 13 months ago. a couple days ago while i was using my drive to watch videos, it suddenly stopped, and then it sounds wierd (like ticking or clicking) i tried to shut it off. and I tried to turn it on again, the problem then it was not detected at all. I left the drive for 3 days and just started it again a couple hours ago, it is still undetected at all, not even in disk management. the funny thing is, it is detected in device manager. i tried many software recovery (luckily they provide trial versions) that access the disk via dos, and they can't even read the physical drive. i really need to get my data back, it contains valuable personal data. photos, movies, my lab works, etc.

is there anything that i can do? i'm a student and i can't afford spending thousand dollars just to retreive my personal data. i searched the internet and found out that it is called 'click of death'.

the hdd is like this (this guy has the same hdd and symptom like mine)

and it sucks to know that the warranty voids 1 month ago.

any help appreciated. i'm desperate to get my data back..

Hi,

This does appear to be a failed unit.

If you do not wish data recovery you may talk with a local technician to see what can be done. Unfortunately any removal may void your warranty.

Re: help, maxtor one touch III 500 gb firewire/usb problem

failed unit after a year and a month?! just my luck.. i've contacted seagate data recovery service center, he said that it's better for me to send my drive to them, and the recovery cost arounds $900-1900. i already bought a new drive seagate freeagent pro 750 gb, I don't need my maxtor drive anymore, all I want is the data. Is there any DIY solution that i can do? I've read in some forums that putting it to the freezer can temporarily make the drive readable again. But that's only work once. I'm in a big dilemma right now. what should i do?

Don't put it in your freezer. This will only work for 15-20 minutes if you are lucky and then after that the condensation will completely fry the drive. If you need the information the best thing that you can do it is to give it to a professional. Anyone that you know of locally? They must have the proper equipment in order to get your information back so don't hesitate to ask how they will go about getting your information back. If you still need further assistance I'm in Miami, FL and I might be able to help. email me or message me.

you could always remove the drive from the casing, and install it in your computer

Re: help, maxtor one touch III 500 gb firewire/usb problem

@thewzard

i live in melbourne, australia and I have contacted some data recovery professionals. The price is too expensive for me (i'm a student). For hardware failure, it can cost up to AU$2000. i can't afford that. yeah, i heard that, putting in freezer can work for one time only. I'd rather not getting the data back yet than losing the data forever.

@teamninja

i'm using a laptop, besides i think the problem is in the HDD itself, cos it's detected in device manager as "maxtor onetouch III" but not detected in disk manager.

@unhappyman

yeah i regret buying maxtor too, so yours is onetouch 4? looks like maxtor didn't fix the problem in onetouch III. that's just great. I can live with a broken drive, and all i want right now is the data, i'm not expecting to use the drive anymore.
