maxtor onetouch 120gb freezes computer

[ Edited ]
i use windows vista. a few days ago when i put on my maxtor one touch, and i tried to open 'my computer' it froze. the computer also freezes when i try to click on 'documents', since my documents are in the maxtor. when i turn maxtor off, everything goes back to normal.
i've been using the maxtor for over a year, but a few days ago this started to happen.

is there any way to fix this? is there a way to get my files out of maxtor one touch so they don't get deleted?

Re: maxtor onetouch 120gb freezes computer

that could be due to the software acting up, rather than the hard drive itself, but it could be the drive too.

a few ideas:

1) boot up the pc and let it run for a while just sitting there, then plug in the maxtor drive and see what happens
2) try it on a 2nd pc to see what happens
3) while the maxtor is up and running on the 1st pc and the pc is acting slow, do a control + alt + delete and open the task manager / list.   go to processes tab and find anything that says maxtor or mxopswd.sys or anything like that, right-click on it, end process tree.  if that fixes it, the problem is narrowed on the software.  you can uninstall it and reinstall it or whatever, maybe tech support knows what the deal is on that
4) if that doesnt fix it, then its possibly the drive.  do what you can to get your data off the drive.  you dont have a backup?  sorry for you, that puts you in a tough situation.  get your data off and then run chkdsk on the drive
5) run seatools for windows on the drive
6) if the drive passes those diags, then reformat it

Re: maxtor onetouch 120gb freezes computer

I am having exactly the same problem except that I am running XP (service pack 3) not Vista. This problem started a few days ago and I have done everything on the FAQ to no avail. Any further direction would be greatly appreciated as I use my Maxtor for all my important documents!

Does the external drive have a password ?
Is it working fine on another PC ?

Thank you for your questions. I don't have the external drive password protected, the maxtor also  froze a second computer as well. Although the external drive lights up and makes noise as if it is working when powered on, the computer doesn't "see" it.

The computer "freezes" in the sense that I can't open any folders while the maxtor is turned on. When turned off the problem doesn't rectify itself and the computer must be rebooted. I've tried different usb ports as well as a different cable just in case it is a hardware issue. I've also run a chkdsk to no avail.

Perhaps I should try re-installing Windows and then re-installing the maxtor software again. Can I do this without re-formatting the Maxtor? I was hoping it was a Service Pack 2 error which would correct itself with a Windows update, but it just doesn't seem to be the case.

Thank you for your consideration!

I have the exact same problem with a One Touch III on Vista.  Did you ever get a solution to the problem?

Thanks.

Re: maxtor onetouch 120gb freezes computer

I discovered I could access the Maxtor One Touch if I turned its power on just before my task bar starts to load.

It is a pain to get the timing just right, but for some reason it is the only way I can access the Maxtor.

A very frustrating dilemma to say the least! I am in the process of organizing the OneTouch and then will be looking

at another alternative just in case this one is at the end of its lifespan.

Re: maxtor onetouch 120gb freezes computer

I will give it a try.  Do you mean that you turn the power on before the Vista logo and Vista sound comes up during the boot process or after the point after you log in to Windows but before the screen comes up?

Thanks!
