one touch 3 turbo light in power save mode, not recognized

Ok, I have a Maxtor one touch III turbo 1.5 Terabyte external hard drive. Had it about a year and a half.

I have many important things on it.

The light on the front is blinking in what is apparently power save mode.

But my computer won't recognize the drive. It doesn't show up under "my computer" or the device manager. and I've looked and there isn't an "other Drives" listing in the device manager. I've been through the troubleshooting page.

But if it is in power save mode and that is why it is not being recognized, how do I get it out of power save mode?

Or, I do get access back to my hard drive?!?!

I have too many important things on there.

Thanks for any help

Completely clueless,

Make sure you try all the steps in the external troubleshooter thing.

Re: one touch 3 turbo light in power save mode, not recognized

Ok, thanks. But no. That page did not help. I had already been to it. Which just tells me what the light sequences mean. And mine is blinking the top half. Which as the chart says means it is in sleep mode.

I Really need some help here guys.
For me, the statistic has become that whenever I need troubleshooting help with a product, I get next to no help, or no replies at all, to posts on the "help" boards.
Please don't be just another statistic for me.

I will try and be more specific with the problem:

I'm running on Windows Vista 32 bit. I have had a Maxtor One Touch III Turbo 1.5 Terabyte for over a year with hardly a problem with it.
But all of a sudden my computer doesn't see it at all. It's not even telling me "Unrecognized drive". It is just not seeing it. AT ALL.
It's not showing up in the device manager. I've looked all around the device manager and it's not there.

On the front of the device, the upper half of the light is blinking (Which as the above chart tells, means sleep mode, power save mode whatever) I can hear the fan going.

The power cable has the green light on it. It appears to be properly powering the unit.

I've rebooted the pc. I've tried changing usb ports. I've tried changing usb cables. I've tried installing the maxtor software, but when the time comes that software prompts me to connect the hard drive, it sees nothing.

Please some help. Any help!

Re: one touch 3 turbo light in power save mode, not recognized

Is it possible that maybe the hard drive itself is fine, but the interface is what is dead?

Re: one touch 3 turbo light in power save mode, not recognized

cinco,

Did you try all the troubleshooting steps in the MacOS section of the troubleshooter?  And I mean all of them.

If so, if it doesn't appear anywhere even on a 2nd Mac or PC, it is probably dead.

Re: one touch 3 turbo light in power save mode, not recognized

I have the Maxtor One Touch III 500GB Triple Interface.  Actually, I have three of them.  Windows XP Pro reported a write failure with the K: Drive.  I looked at the drive and the lights said it is in power save mode.  The other drives were working just fine.

After some other diagnostic steps, I decided to change power supplies / bricks. The problem MOVED with the power supply.  By this I mean A) the lights report the drive is in power save mode and B) Windows no longer recognizes the drive.  Hence, I'm thinking the problem has something to do with the power supply.  The data on the K: drive is 100% fine.

I swapped the power supply back and again the K drive stays in power save mode and Windows fails to recognize it.  The other drive (N) is 100% fine and works like a champ.

Any thoughts on is going on?

How do I get a replacement power supply unit (if that is the problem)?
