one touch 4 Drive Light Request!

Hi there, I wonder if you could help with a issue I have.

It may seem trivial but it has caused a mood swing from extreme joy at receiving the drive to severe depression in me in just one hour.

I love the One Touch 4 drive capacity and operation,  but I would really like to switch the flashing light off!  I find it intensely annoying.    I have a model STM307504OTD3E1-RK.

You could say "but, it shows you if the drive is working or not!"  Its quite irrelevant in telling me if it has worked or not really and yes I know that.   it doesn't need to flash like a billboard, just on at start and off at the end would do me.

However,

While it doesn't flash at a rate that would normally induce photo-epilepsy - it reminds me that I suffer from this affliction and dulls my mood at possessing and using this nice drive.

Kinda like its winking at me and saying "Well your data's safe - but don't forget you might be about to have a grande mal seizure. OK? Smile :smileyvery-happy:"

I am thinking of ways to dampen the light which include wrapping several layers of duct tape around the "customisable" one touch button (obviously avoiding impeding its operation), painting it black with enamel paint or disassembling the drive and working out a way to rewire it so the light is permanently off.

I have no expectancy in receiving a solution or response really.

Thanks for reading this far,

Sorry to bother You.

Steve.

I totally agree with you and would also like to see the light issue fixed. The blinking is annoying and it is also too bright.

Re: one touch 4 Drive Light Request!

I placed a small rectangular sticker on the light. I then painted (enamel spray) over the entire light, then removed the sticker. Vuola, I could still see the light, but not nearly as annoying as it was. Plus this doesn't void the warranty, just in case you were thinking about opening up the enclosure and re-wiring the light.

Thank You!

Thanks fellow owners,
I am glad it is not just me being oversensitive !  the small sticker and enamel spray painting is a great idea if there is no alternative. :smileywink:

Re: one touch 4 Drive Light Request!

Now... about the pilot light... I'm not saying that the LED is too bright, but... I'm considering taking the unit up to the roof, and providing a beacon to all the ships at sea. I'm sure the astronauts in the Space Station would also appreciate knowing where my house is located. :-)

The lamp has a number of modes, from always on, to blinking, to "intensity breathing". I'm sure it knows what it's doing, but it isn't very clear to me. Has anyone found an explanation of the indicator lamp modes?

Re: one touch 4 Drive Light Request!

You'd think that Seagate at least would have figured out that a huge flashing white light signifies, 'There Is A Problem'; 'Device Not Working'; 'Call Police Immediately'.

Apparently not.

The thing is so irritating that I'm considering voiding my warranty and using one of these:

Failing that, here is a simple hardware solution: http://www.sfcw.co.uk/instructables/

[ Edited ]

@ headscratcher : Thanks - nice research!

Wonder why they didn't put that in the manual though . . .

Cheers, Mark
