starting again please help

Hi I just got a Maxtor onetouch 4 mini 250gb yesterday and have probably spent about 8 hours already trying to work out a few problems, if anyone can help me it would be greatly appreciated.

Firstly after I installed it it started to automaticly copy file of my p.c I decided I wanted to do everything manually so I would Know exactly what was on there so I cancelled that and then wanted to delete everything of my external drive, I could not find an option anywhere to do this.  I then accessed it through my computer selecting the maxtor drive and started manually deleting all the files (really annoying) but then came to a few it would not let me delete saying they were unreadable or corrupted! I just want to get rid of everything and start again like its new.   Later when I went into picassa it appears there are now some pictures missing from my p.c (what the!).  Luckily I think I have them on disk but why would this happen?

The other problem I have is with maxtor manager when I click on it it opens up but then it frequently dissapears (as though minimising down to nothing) and I can see it in the bar along the bottom of the screen as it is still running but I cant view it if I click on its tab it shoots up on the screen and disappears so i have to control alt delete and end the program and then open it again.

Also when I start my computer it dosn't start up the maxtor I have to unplug it all and plug it back in again every time sometimes twice.

Sorry this is so long but I have spent ages reading through the forums and online instructions and havn't found any answers and for some reason this device didn't come with any instructions (too bad if your not online). Also I would like to know what to do with the SafetyDrill recovery cd that came with it.

Re: starting again please help

First, this is not official tech support, it's a forum of other uses.   Yes, there are some Maxtor techs that check these.

Tech support is the toll free number.

I don't know why you are missing some files from your C:/  The supplied software will copy or "SYNC" folders.

If you are using a "SYNC" feature, delete from one folder, the file from the other folder will go away too.

as you say some files are corrupt, read the FAQ (top of the page) and turn off  "write delay", .  That will do it.

It could also be some files you copied from your HD are "read only".  Hence it copies them as "read only" to the extrnal.  You have to "right click" on them, go to Properties, then remove the read only tab, then delete.  That should rid your external of those files.

If they are corrupt from the "write delay", you need to do a MS "check disk", the supplied software won't fix that.

Write back or search for "chkdsk".

The biggest problem with these types of "read only" files are if you try to "backup" these, they copy on the external as "read only".  When you do another backup they won't be written over by the "newer read only" files and come up as errors.  Some programs update these "read only" files, the backup software sees a different date stamp and tries to copy.

Yes, you can delete files from the Mini.  It is like many external drives sold my many companies.  The Maxtor/Segate put a hardware code in their "usb controller" that talks between the HD and USB. That's why you can get an icon to recognize it's plugged in and not from a memory stick or other external HD.

So you can go into the external and delete or copy and paste from your C: drive to your heart's delight without using the software.

It's just a drive letter to your computer.

The drive disappearing.  That does happen to many people... check the FAQ.  Sometimes that can be solved.

The manual is on the external.
