win98se Driver Needed

Hi,

I have a 500GB Seagate usb desktop harddrive that i recently purchased and want to connect it to a win98se machine.

I tried to follow the link on this site to the "win98 & usb" drivers section but the link is faulty.

Any ideas?

Anywhere else i can get the drivers i need?

Thanks.

Re: win98se Driver Needed

What is the drive's model number?
Could you show me which page has the dead link on it, please?

Re: win98se Driver Needed

Alan,

The label at the back of the hard drive has the following numbers

P/N 9SF2A2-500

S/N 2GHJCC3N

As for the link - it worked ok at home & I downloaded the drivers but they weren't recognised as drivers for the hard drive.

Link for win98 drivers

I noticed on the PDF file it says something about legacy USB Seagate products, and that win98se is not supported on current models?

For your info, my PC still has the original USB from when i bought it in 2000 - not USB2 if that makes any difference.

Hope I've given you enough info now.

Thanks, David.

Re: win98se Driver Needed

OK, here's the deal.
This has to be Windows98 SE

What makes this improbable is that this model of drive is not supported in any OS older than XP.  2000 Pro...there's a decent chance it would work.  But 98SE is pretty old.
These drivers are for our first generation of external drive, not for the one you're trying to use it for.
So you can certainly give it a try; here's how:

Download the drivers.
Whichever it is, choose "Drivers" and download the USB Windows 98 drivers.
Then press Start | Settings | Control Panel | System | Device Manager | open Disk Drives | right-click on the external drive | Properties | Driver | Update Driver | Next | Search for a better driver (Recommended) | Specify a location (hit Browse now) | browse to the drivers | complete the driver update.

If that fails, you'll probably have to upgrade the OS or use CDROM or flash drives or something to backup your 98SE computer.

Re: win98se Driver Needed

Alan,

Thanks for your reply.

Looks like i'll need to try some other way of backing up 60GB of my audio work.

Thanks,

David.
