Hello, I havea 300 gig external hard drive I purchased in 2009 and for the last two weeks I keep getting asked for permission from the adminstrator to do any editing and I am the administrator. How can I fix this?

Thanks for your help, I know it is getting old but as long as I can add files to it then it serves my purpose, I can not do that right now and if I can not fix it I will have to get a new one.
