HD103SJ suddenly became undetectable

Hello,

I have been using my spinpoint F3 HD103SJ for over a year now. It functions as a storage drive and my ocz vertex 2 as the boot drive.

Due to problems with the vertex 2, i changed it to a vertex 4 yesterday.

Initially, everything went smoothly. After a while, the programs installed in the spinpoint started to hang and eventually, it could not be detected at all by windows. However it can be detected in the bios and diskmgmt.msc utility.

Now it just shows itself as a drive with no volume in my computer. When i try to open it, it says that i have to format the drive before i can use it.

Is there any way i can get usage of it without formatting or at least access it to recover some data at least.

Regards

IMO the safest approach is to clone your drive, sector by sector, using a tool that understands how to work around bad sectors (eg ddrescue freeware), and then use data recovery software on the clone.

Alternatively, you could boot from a Ubuntu Live CD. Sometimes Linux can access a damaged file system when Windows cannot.
