It is reliable, you should set your bios to ide mode, but I suspect the drive is still full of errors, you can try ESTools as well but you need to hunt for it as Seagate has had to pull it for legal reasons, (hirens boot)
Write down any error codes you find, and then call customer services before returning it again to explain what has happened.

They should come to the same conclusion tbh, iirc the same guy wrote both, infact Seatools looks like a light version of ESTools tbh, ESTools one seems to be better for low level formatting though, but that's just my opinion.
