Is my HD204UI dying? Please help.

[ Edited ]
I bought 4 Samsung HD204UI (2TB) HDDs last year (manufactured on Feb 2011), but I think one of them is about to die. I recently has a lot read problem which causes my Win7 to stall when I tried to access some files. I run SeaTools Windows the drive passes the SMART test, but it failed the DST short test. Then I tried the SeaTools DOS but then both DST short & long test failed. The SeaTools didn't give me any error code because it was detected as a non Seagate drive. Then I tried to run Win7's "CHKDSK /R" command under safe mode but the process stuck 10% at stage 4 of 5. I have waited for almost 36 hours and it still stuck there at 10%. Is my drive need replacement? I still can read most of the files inside but reading certain files will causes my Win7 to freeze for 3-5 minutes tha tran only be killed with Alt+Ctrl+Del command. What should I do now? Should I try to reformat my drive or simply RMA for replacement? Please advice. Thanks.

Install HD Sentinal and see how healthy it is, if it's not healthy do a search for ESTools, burn it to a disc and boot to it, do a low level format and then see what HD Sentinal says then, either way the way it is now it's no good to you currently, so a clean off should be a consideration especially if sentinal says the drive is healthy, hth.

Thanks for your reply. I have tested with hd sentinel and it says SMART failed this time. It has a lot of Read Raw Error. Now I am low level formating with ESTOOL 3.00 right now... Hope everything will turn out fine after that... My drive was manufactured on Feb 2011, and I had reflashed it with the latest firmware before. Don't know why bad thing still happen... Making me worry about my other 3 HD204UI right now...

Re: Is my HD204UI dying? Please help.

I am running the Low level format with ESTOOL for the third time now. First I let the process run over night and the next morning I saw it stopped and said "process is interrupted by user" error message. Then I repeated the low level format on the second time but my whole PC freeze when process was around 19%. This is my third time repeating the process after a hard reboot. After this I think I just gonna RMA it... too much troublesome.

Make sure you set the bios to ide mode, it could be you are hitting a bad sector and it can't read in which case you will need to rma.
