Hello there.
I've recently bought 2 3TB Barracuda drives, model ST3000DM001-9YN166, which came with FWs CC94 and CC96.
Both showed the infamous chirping/head-parking sounds; one of them is definitely louder (haven't identified which, guessing the CC94 one?).
Computer also freezes for a bit when that happens.
Searching through the Forums I ran accross this link, which supposedly would update the drives to CC4H firmware:
http://knowledge.seagate.com/articles/en_US/FAQ/22
However, after booting from the downloaded ISO (and changing BIOS from AHCI to IDE), the drives are detected but the program says something like firmware not downloaded and won't update the drives.
It seems that these drives firmwares, CC94 and CC96 are not updateable to CC4H (even though the Model Number is exactly the same).
So I kindly ask:
1) Is Seagate addressing the noise problems for the CC9x firmwares? Should I be concerned with my data, is the chirping noise damaging the drive or something like that?
2) Why are these drives different from the other 3TB ST3000DM001 drives, which present CC4x firmware? Are they newer/older, any changes in specs...?
Thank you,
Bruno
