Atari TT 030 to Barracuda ST32550W - SCSI power and termination issues (no spin up)

I have a Seagate Barracuda ST32550W which I wish to connect to an older hardware product, and unfortunately have read the manual but am unfamiliar with this drive and am experiencing problems.

 

1. No spin up at all from motor

2. No discovery of hard drive from machine

 

I believe that the ST32550W has been configured for a server array. I now wish to implement as a single drive (ID 0) on a 68000 based workstation. It will be used on a short internal 50pin cable with a 50pin-to-68pin converter. 

 

However, I believe that the jumper settings are incorrect, and also if they are now correct there may be an issue preventing the drive from powering up. I cannot find a suitable troubleshooting guide, and this hardware configeration is something I am unfamiliar with. 

 

I am wondering if there is a member who is familiar with a simple but older SCSI2 setup and can help me.

 

Workstation (Atari TT030) -> 50pin SCSI2 -> 50pin-to-68pin converter card -> Seagate Barracuda ST32550W

I have read the 2nd Guide "Product Manual, Volume 1" already, although the "Installation Guide, Rev. E" is very useful and I had not read this one yet. 

 

I have tried expreimenting with jumper settings, based on this.

 

As I still cant even get it to "spin up" and motor start, I am guessing one of the following problems?

 

(a) J1 

 

I dont know whether which of these is right, 

TERM POWER FROM DRIVE

TERM POWER TO SCSI BUS

TERM POWER FROM SCSI BUS

ENABLE SCSI TERMINATOR

 

I have tried setting these options, but I am not really confident that I have made the right choice. 

 

I do know that there should only be one drive, on a short cable with only one connector at each end (one to PC and one to Hard Drive) so should be terminated. But I dont understand what kind should be selected, its very confusing?

 

(b)  J2

 

I selected the following

ENABLE MOTOR START (off)

DELAY MOTOR START (off)

 

According to manual, leaving the jumper off the connector means the drive should spin up automatically. But it has not done this. I have tried all combinations of jumpers on and off on these pins. 

 

(c) J4

 

I have not tried setting these pins. I can only guess that the following might have an effect, but not sure if I should use them?

ENABLE SCSI TERMINATOR 

+5V

 

I was about to put a jumper on the ENABLE SCSI TERMINATOR pins, but then looking at the diagram it doesn ot show a rectangular jumper (like in the other diagrams) but I highlighted pin, so I am not sure how to set this. I feel that the scsi terminator should be enabled? Also is drive running in wrong voltage? The drive is labelled to operate in 5v and 12v configerations?

 

(d) I want to set SCSI ID to zero, and this seems easy. I am convinced that this is not the issue, and besides any SCSI will do for now.

I am also now wondering if the drive needs to be hooked to a controller before it spins...

 

Could this be the issue. The red wire of the flat 50 pin cable is pin1 I assume. Is the notch on the 50pin socket at the drive end the "top"of the female connector. I believe this was the orientation use on the old 4MB drive so I carefully marked the ribbon cable with a marker pen with a dot (as you can see) and put it in this way. I am nervous to try it the other way as I do not want to damage the TT !  

 

 

Is this about right. Still no joy, and unsure of power jumpers and same spin up problem!

What I know about SCSI could fit on a postage stamp in a large font. However, ISTM that both the Motor Start and Delay Motor Start jumpers should be out if the drive is to spin up immediately after power on (see Fig 14a, page 44 of Installation Guide).

According to page 41, "if you install the drive on the end of the SCSI bus, enable termination by installing a jumper on pins 5 and 6 of connector J1".

As for Terminator Power, I would choose "Terminator power from drive (default)". This selects the source of the power for the active bus terminator, either from the drive itself, or from the Term Pwr pins on the SCSI cable. Just to satisfy my curiosity, are pins 3 and 4 of J1 shorted together? If so, then I suspect that both pins connect to the Term Pwr signal in the SCSI cable. Pin #5 would connect to the drive's +5V supply, and pin #2 would connect to the supply pin of the active terminator.

FWIW, I know that ATA drives can be configured to Power Up In Standby (PUIS). This feature can be selected via a jumper (PM2 in WD drives), or via firmware as in the case of Seagate drives. The ATA standard specifies that the jumper takes precedence over any firmware setting. When PUIS is enabled, the drive still identifies itself via the ATA Identify Device command, but only with a minimal configuration. There are two ways to spin up the drive, either via an ATA command that requires access to the platters, or via a special ATA Set Features subcommand (0x07).

The only remaining item is the narrow-to-wide SCSI adapter. Your drive model has a wide (16-bit) single-ended SCSI bus whereas the Atari appears to have a narrow (8-bit) bus. Are you sure the adapter is correctly handling the conversion?

As for the location of pin #1, the red stripe would indeed identify pin #1 on the cable. As for the adapter, I would think that the easiest way to confirm the correct orientation would be to ensure that the ground pins at the 68-pin end all connect to the same point as the ground pins at the 50-pin end.

Hmmm. I tried all these settings. Also just with the power connector in.

 

Then I tried the same in a working IBM PC. Again no spin up.

 

So I am guessing that the trust Atari TT030 Workstation is not at fault, and possibly not the jumpers after all?

 

Furthermore,  upon examining the PCB I found that one of the IC's onboard was too hot to comfortably touch, I have labelled this in the following picture. Please note that I have NO IDEA how electronics works, or if this is an indication of a damaged chip. But I wonder if this "MOS transistor" somehow has something to do with it?

 

 

 

I am guessing that this drive was out of garantee 15 years ago!!

 

Can anyone suggest is this is right? I am tempted to try and replace the OC if this is the case. 

 

I can just about manage a soldering iron, but my electronics skills are that of a seconday school teacher (which I am).

That appears to be one of the motor driver chips. It is probably a PHC21025 dual complementary MOSFET.

Assuming it is faulty, then there could be other faulty motor drivers on the other motor windings. Otherwise it could be that the motor is seized. Could you upload a detailed photo of the PCB? I can help you confirm the onboard supply voltages and a few other measurements.

BTW, is the adapter PCB active or passive, ie does it have any electronics, or does it merely convert the connector pinouts? Could we see a close-up photo of both sides?
