Setting up self encrypted drive in RAID1

I have an office server that I am trying to make HIPAA compliant.  I want to set up 2 Constellation ST1000NM0031 SED in a RAID1 (mirrored) array with SBS 2011.  Just got the drives, but cannot find anything that tells how to set up as an encryped drive.  Is there another product I need?

Thanks

Re: Setting up self encrypted drive in RAID1

I'm having a similar questions.  I'm looking at purchasing ST1000NM0031drives for a RAID1 environment so that I can have data-at-rest security.  Also for HIPPA.  Using Windows Server 2008 R2 Foundation.

Trying to evalutate replacing the current HDD's with ST1000NM0031drives vs using MS BitLocker to do the drive encryption.

Why does Seagate not provide at least a hint on what to do to handle encryption??  I plan to open a support case.   I also want to talk to Softex Inc about their SecureDrive software.

I'll post as I find out more.

Re: Setting up self encrypted drive in RAID1

Hey

You need a Mainboard or an Raid Controller who support SED Drives.

I bouth this Controller -> INTEL RSBL040.

The fu... is i wait up to 1Month for the Seagate HDD.... :smileyfrustrated:

Re: Setting up self encrypted drive in RAID1

I would never reccommend using hardware encryption.  You are much safer using software encryption.  This sits at a much higher level and is under your control.  The problems with using hardware encryption is that:

a) you are now on a very small subset of hardware and replacing or upgrading your hardware in the future may become impossible without replacing everything.

b) With the software option the disk is unaware of the encryption and so any compatible disk can be used.
