st3300657ss wont work on Areca 1880ix

I have 8 of these drives and they are all showing up as FAILED in the Areca bios. I find it hard to believe that 8 new drives are all DOA, so I suspect something else is going on. Anyone have any ideas?

Would it be possible to connect the drives one by one to a PC and run SeaTools Enterprise on them?
